OCCC's shark gets its name

Posted May 4, 2016
After an exhaustive search and well over 100 suggestions, Oregon Coast Community College's mascot has a name. President Birgitte Ryslinge traveled to Oceanlake Elementary today to announce the name - Waverly - with a guest of honor in tow. They visited the school, and Miss Brooks' kindergarten class in particular, because students in the class had submitted a number of name suggestions and drawings of the shark during the College's contest. Here's a video of the announcement of Waverly's name, from earlier today.

OCCC Student honored with national award

-  Miguel Angel Gaspar Marquez traveled to Chicago to receive prestigious award, and $7,000

-  Only 20 college students from across the US selected

-  Gaspar and fellow OCCC student Tomy Torres also named to All-Oregon Academic Team

It’s not every day that an Oregon college student finds himself or herself on the cover of USA Today, but this month, an Oregon Coast Community College student did just that.  Miguel Angel Gaspar Marquez was selected for one of just 20 spots on the “All-USA Community College Academic Team,” earning recognition as one of the most impressive community college students in the nation.

Miguel traveled to Chicago, along with OCCC President Dr. Birgitte Ryslinge and Dean of Students & Instruction Cindy Carlson, to receive the honor in person. A special edition of USA TODAY in Illinois features Miguel and his 19 fellow Academic Team members.
